RICHÉ J. DANIEL BARNES, PH.D.
Dr. Riché J. Daniel Barnes is a sociocultural anthropologist whose teaching and research specializations are at the intersection of black feminist theories, work and family policy, Black motherhood, marriage, and family and African Diasporic raced, gendered, and classed identity formation. She is the author of the award-winning book, Raising the Race: Black Career Women Redefine Marriage Motherhood and Community. She has been featured on Left of Black with Mark Anthony Neal (see video below) and given numerous interviews and lectures. She has written broadly on "Black Strategic Mothering" a theoretical framework she developed to explore Black women's interior work, community, and family lives and how they impact their relationships and health. She is Associate Professor of Anthropology and the newly appointed Director of the African American Studies Program (2025) at the University of Florida. She is the former Dean of Pierson College, and continues to be on the advisory committee for the Education Studies Program at Yale University. Dr. Barnes is also past president of the Association of Black Anthropologists and is available for conferences, lectures and workshops.
